Collectibles Are A Lucrative Business & Popular Pastime

by Daniel Wright

The phrase of one man's junk is another man's treasure holds true when it comes to collector's items. Purchasing collectibles is a fun way to remember past events and time periods of long ago. For those who know what they are doing, it's becoming a lucrative business.

Collecting items of personal value has always been a popular pastime. From stamps to postcards, books to magazine and comic books, many items increase in value over time, and so represent a financial investment. Original, mint condition comic books and sports memorabilia can be worth a fortune, as can items such as antique furniture or art that may not be in perfect condition. The key to selling such items is finding the right buyer.

Buyers of collectibles have many places to go to make their purchases. Auctions and online auctions are always popular, and estate sales usually offer a variety of unique items. People often donate unwanted items to thrift stores in order to support charity. Finally, specialty stores are great places to browse for items like comic books and sports memorabilia.

Some great examples are sports collectibles which include autographed baseballs, old jerseys, posters, and baseball cards. Sports themed collector's items are very popular, because there have been so many great athletes. People like to remember the great athletes and great teams with small tokens. Often times an item autographed by a great athlete turns out to be worth a lot of money. Sports are a large part of our culture, and that is reflected in the commerce of sports memorabilia.

Another very popular niche in collectibles are the Coca-Cola collectors items. They include tins, posters, glasses, old Coke bottles, figurines, and ornaments. They often have a retro feel to them. Early Coca Cola memorabilia often depicted women in beautiful clothing drinking a soda. More recently, many of the Coke items feature the signature Coca-Cola polar bear.

In some ways it is true that one person's junk could easily be treasured by another person. It has created a market for old objects that commemorate a time period or an event. Everybody has their own favorite items that they always keep an eye out for. What's yours?
